Wasps!

#1

I just got a colony into a Warre hive this weekend. The colony was a split from a neighbors langstroth operation; Russian bees and an Italian queen. Tonight I observed a wasp or yellow jacket buzzing around the hive entrance. Is there anything I can or should do to prevent the wasps from fouling up my new hive? Or can the bees typically take care of wasps?

Thanks.

Mark,

You shouldn’t need to do anything to protect the colony from wasps/hornets/etc. As long as they are healthy and strong they should be able to handle it themselves. If the colony is weak then wasps/hornets will take advantage of them, usually later in the season toward fall.

Best,

Matt
