Quilt Box conflicting information

Hello all. I’m struggling to understand the best way forwards in 2 areas due to conflicting advice being shared by local French beekeepers and am hoping folks here can help please:

  1. Whether to leave a quilt box on our Warré hives for the entire year (changing materials if needed to support more insulation in the winter), or to remove it during the summer? We’ve been advised to do both!
  2. Whether to drill some ventilation holes in the bottom board of the roof… (we’re never quite sure what the point of all that eaves ventilation is if the base is a solid piece of wood!) Some say it’s the first thing they do and cover the holes with mesh and others say; leave it alone!

As a result, we’re a bit confused and just want to do right by our bees
Thanks in advance
