Protecting Hive Wood

Way back when I was a kid I help a friend paint/protect a fishing boat, his father was building, with a 50/50 mix of Linseed oil and turpentine. As I understood it: the turpentine penetrated the wood and the linseed oil seal it in. We used regular, everyday, paint brushes and applied at LEAST two coats. Would this work? Would the bees object to the turpentine odor? OR is this just a bad idea from the start? And we should just stick to Tung Oil?
