Cleaning the hive

In a top bar hive with a solid floor, is it necessary to try and occasionally “clean” the floor of the hive? Or do the bees take care of it? After a long period of time, do you not get a buildup of “trash” on the floor?

Thanks for your post. On a healthy hive there should really be no need to clean the floor. As you said, the bees clean it. In a dead or dying hive, the floor will accumulate debris, dead bees, etc. Once a colony is dead I take out all the combs and dump out the debris. Sometimes scraping them out is helpful.

Also, the same goes for a screened bottom hive. Even with the screened bottom, in a dead/dying hive, the debris will accumulate just the same as a solid floor.
