Captured Swarm

#1

Matt,

I caught this swarm using the top bar nuc box I got from you. The bees have been in the nuc for about a week now. How do I ensure they are building straight comb, when this is all I see. They are taking up about 4-5 bars. Thanks for all the help. Looks like I’m going to need to buy another hive. David

David,

Thanks for your post. Glad you got a swarm! Early on the combs tend to be very straight. I’d wait until they’ve built a few and then take a look – once they are built out enough that you can see them through the bees. It usually isn’t until they start building surplus honey combs that they begin getting crooked (usually toward one end of the bar to begin with).

Best,

Matt
